Volumes 1 and 2 in the collected edition of De Quincey's 'Selections Grave & Gay'; being a series of essays on autobiographical subjects, but also including essays on Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Southey; from the Library of James Whyte 6th Premier of Tasmania, with Whyte's autograph to prelims of both volumes - James Whyte was a Scottish-born Australian pastoralist and politician who served as Premier of Tasmania from January 1863 to November 1866; volume 1 is the second edition (ie the second edition in the Selections Grave & Gay collected edition) 1855, volume 2 is the 1854 edition; brown cloth boards with blind-stamped decorations to front and rear, and gilt titling to spines; both volumes with blind-stamped bookshop logos to front endpapers, foxing to text blocks, and very occasional mild foxing in text, o.w. Very Good throughout; boards rubbed and scuffed.
