About This Item

London: Hogarth Press and the Institute of Psycho-Analysis, 1946. Second Edition. 8vo, publisher’s original green cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine. 137pp (one advertisement). A fine copy. The book in its entirety remains clean, crisp, and fresh. Text block is tight and straight. EDITED BY ERNEST JONES. “This work appeared originally in 1925 in volume iv. of Die Medizin der Gegenwart in Selbstdarstellungen (Leipzig: Felix Meiner), a collection of short studies by various members of the medical profession designed (as the title shows) to give a picture of the present state of medicine as revealed in the autobiographies of its leaders. The stress was thus laid by implication upon the professional rather than the personal histories of the contributors.” This is not to be confused with Freud’s prior “autobiographical studies,” as he states in the first chapter that this edition is based more on his professional work, rather than his personal experiences in the field.
