Currier & Tilton, Bibliography of Holmes, pages 69-72; BAL 8781). viii, 373, [1], [2] ad pp. With engraved title and eight plates. Bound in publisher's blind-stamped green cloth, spine with gilt lettering. Very Good with touches of wear and fraying to extremities, cartoon of author mounted on front free endpaper, hinges tender, binding otherwise holding, faint age-toning to pages, a few easily-erasable penciled notes to prelims and margins. One of the most often reprinted works of 19th century American literature, and the book which made the author famous.
Synopsis
I was just going to say, when I was interrupted, that one of the many ways of classifying minds is under the heads of arithmetical and algebraical intellects. All economical and practical wisdom is an extension or variation of the following arithmetical formula: 2+2=4. Every philosophical proposition has the more general character of the expression A+B=C. We are mere operatives, empirics, and egotists, until we learn to think in letters instead of figures.
