About This Item
Grove Mill House, Watford, 25 August [1857].. 4pp. on folded octavo lettersheet, accompanied by the original envelope. A few small foxmarks or tea stains, envelope ragged from opening, otherwise very good. A good literary letter from the Irish poet and critic to the Chevalier de Chatelain, translator and compiler of the five volume collection, BEAUTÃS DE LA POÃSIE ANGLAISE (1860-72). Perhaps in response to receiving translations of his own work, de Vere writes: "Pray accept my best thanks for your kindness in sending me your two translations. So far as I may venture to judge, they are both of them admirably done; nor could the special difficulties which belong to translation have been met, or more successfully overcome." De Vere adds a long postscript, sending his "warmest thanks for the two volumes you so kindly sent me ... I am particularly glad that that beautiful poem 'Evangeline' should be presented to French readers - I am still more so that Chaucer should become known in France ... he derived so much from the old 'Romance' Poetry, that in their French dress his poems will seem to return by right to one of the chief sources from which they were drawn."
