Athenaeum, 12 May 1882. 2 pp. 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition. P.H.Calderon (1833-1898), painter. He was Keeper of the Royal Academy. From the beginning he was inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, and some of his work showed the detail, deep colors, and realistic forms that characterize the style. Calderon became a leading member of the St John's Wood Clique, a group of artists interested in modern genre and historical subjects. Historical, biblical, and literary themes were common in Calderon's later work.

1885. Ephemera. Autograph letter signed, on letterhead Weston Lodge, 16, Grove End Road, N. W., dated Feb. 17, 1885. Addressed to E, Grattan, Esq., 'My dear Sir.' Single sheet folded to create 4 pages, written on all leaves. Calderon apologizes for not being able to submit work for a proposed exhibition in Antwerp and suggests the names of other painters 'whom I remember as being part our little band in Antwerp were: Mr. G. A. Storey, ARA, (19 St. John's Wood Road, NW) and David W. Wynfield (14 Grove-end-Road, St. John's Wood, N.W.).' Mild foxing. Previously folded for mailing.

Calderon was an English painter who initially worked in the Pre-Raphaelite style, especially the "St. John's Wood Clique," who patterned their work after the PRB. "I cannot tell you how very much sorry I am that I have not been able to get round to se your 3 pictures today. My own picture (I only have one) is so much behindhand that I have three models coming tomorrow (think of that) and plenty to do till my "show days" Saturday & Sunday..."

London: Pears Soap, 1898. A lovely copy of a famous and rare Pears Soap advertisement: we have not had this image for 20 years. Handsome chromolithograph of a young boy in front of a wicket with his bat straight to the ground in a defensive pose. Large chromolithograph print laid on canvas, 20 1/2 x 31 3/4", based on a painting by Philip Calderon, 1882. Beautiful 12 color printing, 3 repaired cracks into image on right side which are only slightly noticeable, otherwise vy good condition. This was one of a series of three elaborate chromolithographic advertisements for Pears. The other two advertisements were of African gray parrots in a cage & a woman & child with Persian carpets.
