About This Item

n.p., 1919. Manuscript. Slight creasing. Near Fine. A handwritten poem on a 6-3/4" x 8-1/4" sheet of paper SIGNED "W. D. Howells" at the conclusion with the dates 1895 and 1919. The eight-line poem was first published in the book STOPS OF VARIOUS QUILLS in 1895.

Before Him weltered like a shoreless sea
The souls of them that had not sought to be,
With all their guilt upon them, and they cried,
They that had sinned from hate and lust and pride,
"Thou that didst make us what we might become,
Judge us!" The Judge of all the earth was dumb;
But high above them, in His sovereign place,
He lifted up the pity of His face.
