Washington, 1841. unbound. Complimentary autographed letter signed "S.P. Chase," recommending a colleague for a position as Chaplain, in part: "He is not a relation of mine, but formal acquaintance enables me to say that he is a man of sincere piety, great personal worth and eminently qualified for the position...He has...been assiduously engaged in laborious and self denying pastoral duty and desires the appointment...to reestablish his health." 1 page on white paper, folds, slightly aged at the edges, 4to, 9.75 x 8 inches, Washington, June 24, 1841. Very good condition.<br/> <br/> Ohio governor, Secretary of Treasury under Lincoln, and 6th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.<br/> <br/>
