Rio de Janeiro, H. Laemmert & C., n.d. (ca. 1877-1881).. 8°, contemporary red quarter morocco over paper boards stamped in blind (some wear to corners), smooth spine gilt. Wood engraved vignettes. Some browning and foxing. Three small wormholes, occasionally touching a letter in last 120 pp. Overall in good condition. Pictorial bookplate in color, depicting a pastoral scene, but with no text.00 (2 ll.), 380 pp., 5 lithograph plates. *** This edition of a translation of a German novel probably dates from ca. 1877-1881; Eduardo Laemmert retired from the publishing business in 1877, leaving it in the hands of his brother Henrique, who died in 1881. Four plates are signed by J. Führich as artist and Ernst Rauch, Hoffman or Stahist. v. Steifensund; the other plate is unsigned.Christoph Martin Wieland (1733 -1813) was a German poet and writer, best-remembered for having written the first Bildungsroman (Geschichte des Agathon), as well as the epic Oberon, which formed the basis for Carl Maria von Weber's opera of the same name.*** No edition located in Porbase.
