About This Item
Barnes and Noble, 1995. Trade Paperback. Very Good. NICE BOOK! NO SPINE CREASES & MODERATE WEAR ON COVER. LIGHTLY AGED PAGES, NO MARKINGS IN TEXT. Description: The Awakening is a novel by Kate Chopin, first published in 1899 (see 1899 in literature). Set in New Orleans and the Southern Louisiana coast at the end of the nineteenth century, the plot centers around Edna Pontellier and her struggle to reconcile her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century South. It is one of the earliest American novels that focuses on women's issues without condescension. It is also widely seen as a landmark work of early feminism.
Synopsis
The Awakening by Kate Chopin is an important work. Published in Chicago in 1899, this is often hailed as a precursor to modern feminist literature. “She was becoming herself and daily casting aside that fictitious self which we assume like a garment with which to appear before the world.”
