About This Item

London: Ward, Lock and Co., Limited, 1905. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8" by 5". Not Stated. A smart first edition of this gothic fantasy novel from popular Victorian author H. Rider Haggard. First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and thirty-one plates. Collated complete. In the sequel to Haggard's extremely popular novel, She, the reader is plunged into a story set in Tibet after Horace Holly encounters a manuscript containing a second memoir about Ayesha. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. There are several variants to the first edition in terms of binding, this volume contains the following misprints as per the first edition: p.49 - "Khublighan" for "Khubilghan." p.207 - "heirophant" for "hierophant." As cited from "A Bibliography of the Works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard 1856-1925" by J. E. Scott. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine. Rear hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting. Contemporary ink inscription and bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Very Good
