About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., 1908. Fine Binding. Near Fine. 7.5" by 5". W S Gilbert. A finely bound copy of William Schwent Gilbert's comic operas. This collection of light verses is illustrated throughout, with charming drawings by the author. In a Riviere and Son binding, with the binder's stamp to the verso of front endpaper. This Riviere binding has a floral design to the spine, with swallows. Printed in 1908, this is a second printing of the sixth edition of 1904. The 'Bab Ballads' takes its title from Gilbert's own childhood nickname. This collection was written long before he rose to fame for his comic opera librettos with Arthur Sullivan. Noted for their 'topsy-turvy' style of humour, these ballads reveal Gilbert's cynical and satirical approach to humour. A finely bound copy of this poetry collection. In a crushed morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart. Light rubbing to the head of the front joints. Gilt to the spine is fading, particularly to the raised bands. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Scattered spots to the fore-edge, affecting the occasional pages. Near Fine
