New-York: Mahlon Day, 1836. Very good.. Early edition of this classic rhyme, published by "one of the two printers who dominated the New York City children's book publishing scene in the early 19th century" (Modero). Mahlon Day was a prolific and successful 19th-century chapbook publisher, as evidenced by the long list of other "Juvenile Books" he advertises for sale on the rear wrapper of this copy of THE BABES IN THE WOODS. Many of his publications feature short rhymes encouraging children to spend their own money on his books, rather than leaving the selection of reading material up to their parents. 4.5'' x 2.75''. Original yellow pictorial wrappers, saddle-stitched. Black-and-white pictorial title page with nine in-text woodcuts. 18 pages, ads to rear wrapper. Contemporary gift inscription to verso of front wrapper, to "Miss Mary Webster." Wrapper spine a bit tender, with small closed tear running onto front wrapper; mild edgewear. Leaves with scattered foxing. Illustrations sharp.
