Meade lived only to the age of 31 years, but he had a whirlwind existence as a writer, illustrator, and gardener.. His favourite subjects seemed to be his fellow Virginians. This book tackles the problem as to how whites can help blacks. A young woman, part white, marries a black man who contracts TB. In order to prevent being evicted, the woman sells herself to the landlord's son. Extensive pencil writing on rear endpapers, not affecting text. 310 pp..
