London: Longmans, Green, 1911. Gilt title on green cloth boards which are very clean with just a few very minor light marks to front with no wear. Internally there are three initials to front endpaper and some occasional light foxing else clean and unmarked. A Very Good + copy. Photographic frontispiece tissue guarded. Fourth impression. Translated by G. Schoetensack and edited with a preface by the Rev. Robert Hugh Benson. Von Ruville was professor of modern history and a member of the faculty of philosophy at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany. The author, noted for his ' The Life of William Pitt, Earl of Chatham', outlines his conversion to the Catholic Church, a decision which aroused an extraordinary series of attacks on him.
