The Bailey Bridge concept owes its origins to Mr. Donald Coleman Bailey, chief engineer of the British Experimental Bridging Establishment. The early days of the second world war saw major problems due to the weight of new equipment. Bailey's concept of a portable, pre-fabricated bridge was such a good idea that the Americans -- when they entered the war -- and were faced with the same problems of inadequate bridging that they soon abandoned other approaches and adapted the British approach. This dated August 1972, but is a later printing (1981).
