"The romantic ballet was essentially, in a palpable, direct, suggestive form, the spontaneous and unconscious expression of a spiritualist metaphysics". Andre Levinson was a Russian critic and dance writer. While still a professor of Romance languages at St Petersburg University he was a vigorous writer of dance criticism, displaying in his articles a staunch defence of academic dance principles and attacking the reforms of Fokine and Diaghilev (though he became a champion of Isadora Duncan). In 1918 he left Russia for Paris where he taught at the Sorbonne and became one of the most influential critics in France. He published articles on a wide range of dance subjects and wrote many books including Ballet romantique (1919) , L'Œuvre de Léon Bakst (1921) , La Danse au théâtre (1924) , La Vie de Noverre (1925) , Paul Valéry, philosophe de la danse (1927) , La Argentina, Anna Pavlova (both 1928) , Marie Taglioni, La Danse d'aujourd'hui (both 1929) , Les visages de la danse (1933) , and Serge Lifar (1934). E-191; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 54 pages .
