About This Item

Quinteros, Adolfo (Mexican, 1927-1994). LA BANDA MUSICOS DE SAN JUAN COATZOSPAN, VER. (THE MUSICAL BAND OF SAN JUAN COATZOSPAN, VERA CRUZ). Woodcut, 1966, edition size not known. Titled and signed in pencil. 19 3/8 x 35 1/8 inches (image), 24 x 37 inches (sheet). Sheet trimmed a bit unevenly at top and bottom, but with ample margins, else in excellent condition. A vigorous, work, with a lot going on. Each of the ten musicians rendered as an individual charachter. Although dating from the sixties, it shows the strong influence of Mexican printmaking of the 1930s abd 40s. Thanks to Jeremy Wilson for providing the folllowing biographical information: Adolfo Quinteros Gomez (1927 - 1994) was born on June 1st in the city of Chihuahua and moved to Mexico City in 1951 thanks to a scholarship from the government. He studied art at the Academia de San Carlos until 1955. He joined the Taller de Grafica Popular in 1956 and became general secretary of the organization in 1960 and again in 1963. Since 1957 he was a member of the Salon de la Plastica Mexicana. In 1959 he traveled to Czechoslovakia, the Soviet Union, Germany and Holland. He became a co-founder of the Jardin del Arte and in 1966 and 1967 it's president. That same year he left the TGP. His work has become an important piece of Mexican art history and can be seen in private collections and museums such as the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas. (Source: Artcloud) BIOGRAPHY: Adofo Quinteros Gomez was born June 1, 1928 in Chihuahua. A government scholarship allowed him to move to Mexico City in 1951, and for the next four years he studied art at the Academia de San Carlos. He joined the predominantly leftist Taller de Grafica Popular (TGP)-founded by Mendez, O'Higgins and Arenal in 1937-in 1956 where he served as general secretary on two, non-consecutive occasions (1960, and again in 1963). Although his association with the TGP is often emphasized, by the time he parted ways with the group in 1967 he had established his reputation within Mexican art by joining (in 1957) the prestigious Salon de la Plastica Mexicana, travelled to USSR (1959) and other European nations as an artist and presided as presidente of the Jardin del Arte Sullivan-an outdoor gallery and marketplace for artists that existed outside of mainstream galleries and markets- from 1966-7. Quinteros died in Mexico City in 1995, and despite a lifetime of creative output little has been published about his life, work and politics. One of Mexico's great artists and designers is seldom remembered except as a footnote in the history of the TGP. Source Libros Latinos
