The Czech Barrandov studios were founded in the early 1930s; they were nationalized until 1990 under Communist rule and developed to one of Europe's largest studio complexes. It was also the site where a series of films classed among the Czechoslovak New Wave were created, by directors such as Milos Forman, Jiri Menzel, and Jan Nemec.
