About This Item
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1937. First Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. The interior of the book is crisp and clean. There is a former owner's bookplate (skull and cross-bones on a red background -- not to everyone's taste) on the front fixed end paper, but no other marks or wear. The black covers are fresh, with minor wear at tips and corners. A very nice copy. Bartholomew was a contemporary of Thomas a Becket at Canterbury. Contents: Part 1. -- 1. Early years; -- 2. Bartholemew and Becket. -- 3. After Becket: the bishop's last years. -- 4. The bishop as a papal judge-delegate. -- 5. The bishop in his diocese. -- 6. Ther personality of Bartholomew and his literary circle. -- Appendix I: The early archdeacons of Exeter. -- Part 2: The Penitential.
