First and only edition; 8vo (190 x 130 mm); numerous illustrations, advertisements; publisher's orange cloth,a little worn and rubbed at extremities, original dust-jacket with design by Dora Batty to upper panel, advertisement to upper flap and Moorfield's Eye Hospital donation form to rear inside flap, shot closed tear to upper flap fold, rubbed and dust-soiled, small stain to top edge of upper panel; 463.[1] pp.
The third of the famous BBC Handbooks, published annually from 1928 until 1987, chronicling the exciting development of radio & television broadcasting in Britain since its heyday and serving as a guide & record to the British Broadcasting Corporation's technological progression and the broadcasted programmes themselves. This is first edition to be referred to as 'Year Book', the previous two were 'Handbook'.
Dora Batty (1891-1966) was one of the most prolific female artists commissioned by the Underground and London Transport to design posters. In addition to transport posters, Batty also worked on book illustrations, advertisements, textiles and ceramics. From 1932 she taught in the textiles department at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and became Head of School in 1950. She retired in 1958.
