About This Item

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1892. Cloth. Very Good. 7.5" by 5.5". Not Stated. The fourth edition of one of H. Rider Haggard's most successful novels. The fourth edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding. Ink inscription to the front free end paper. Illustrated with a frontispiece and a title page vignette. Collated, complete. H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was an English novelist primarily known for his works of adventure fiction, including 'She' and 'King Solomon's Mines'. The majority of his works have exotic settings, primarily Africa, and he was an extremely prolific writer, producing over fifty novels, three short story collections and a number of non-fiction works and works published in periodicals. His works have been adapted for screen many times. 24 page publisher's catalogue to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally fairly smart, with fading to the spine, with bumping to the extremities and shelf wear to the head and tail of the spine. Front hinge slightly strained but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright but spotted throughout. Very Good

Synopsis

The autumn afternoon was fading into evening. It had been cloudy weather, but the clouds had softened and broken up. Now they were lost in slowly darkening blue. The sea was perfectly and utterly still. It seemed to sleep, but in its sleep it still waxed with the rising tide. The eye could not mark its slow increase, but Beatrice, standing upon the farthest point of the Dog Rocks, idly noted that the long brown weeds which clung about their sides began to lift as the water took their weight, till at last the delicate pattern floated out and lay like a woman's hair upon the green depth of sea.
