One Volume in the series - 'Beauties of England and Wales'. This series originally published in 25 volumes. This volume 2 forms Volume II - CAMBRIDGESHIRE, CHESHIRE and CORNWALL. The Volume is bound in full leather with 5 raised bands, Gilt titling on 2 labels and gilt decoration to each compartment. Probably contemporary or near contemporary bindings. The spine has some flaws/damage, splitting to the edges of the spine. Some small chipping/repair-work with some tiny loss to the head/tail of the spine, but hinges holding currently (front hinge shaky) despite some splits, and overall is an attractive book. London: Printed by Thomas Maiden, for Vernor & Hood, Longman & Rees, Cuthell & Martins [& 4 others in London],, 1801-16. The labour involved was heroic First edition of this impressively thorough work, the most ambitious of its kind since Magna Britannia et Hibernia (1720-1731). Originally conceived as a more modest publication, it became an intensive and occasionally fraught project. In 1800, the publishers Vernor and Hood proposed to Britton that he produce six volumes of topographical commentary. He and Brayley had become friends as teenagers and had already collaborated successfully oin a literary endeavour. They embarked on a walking tour of thousands of miles for these initial volumes, for which they shared credit evenly. At this point, Brayley was predominantly occupied with the text, while Britton was "the organizing genius throughout" (ODNB), overseeing the travel, correspondence, sourcing of materials, and managing the illustrations.
