About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922. First US Edition/Early Printing. Hardcover. Good/N/A. Stated 'Published March, 1922' with colophon to copyright page as per typical first issue of this period, but according to common knowledge - the true first issue did not have the colophon. As well, the second issue is supposed to have the colophon back in place, but with two pages of ads at the end of the book which this book does not have. In dark green cloth with blind stamp titling to front cover and gilt to spine which has dulled a bit. Corners still fairly sharp, but heel of spine shows a few spots of fraying. A few nicks to board edges as well at bottom and front edge of front board witha deep, but short cut/scratch to top of rear board and a chunk out of same at top edge about the diameter of a pencil eraser. Some light tanning to pages and page ends. Top page ends have a moisture stain that is barely visible to tops of pages about a third across and 1/2 inch deep in spots with some light rippling associated. Deckle edge. Pen mark to one page, otherwise clean interior and solid binding. In brand new high quality facsimile jacket.

Synopsis

First published in 1922, The Beautiful and the Damned followed Fitzgerald's impeccable debut, This Side of Paradise , thus securing his place in the tradition of great American novelists. Embellished with the author's lyrical prose, here is the story of Harvard-educated, aspiring aesthete Anthony Patch and his beautiful wife, Gloria. As they await the inheritance of his grandfather's fortune, their reckless marriage sways under the influence of alcohol and avarice. A devastating look at the nouveau riche, and the New York nightlife, as well as the ruinous effects of wild ambition, The Beautiful and the Damned achieved stature as one of Fitzgerald's most accomplished novels. Its distinction as a classic endures to this day.
