About This Item

N.Y.: Hastings House, 1964. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 335 pages, illustrations, map end-papers, Limited edition, #158 of 185 copies specially bound in ¼ leather, spine with raised bands, SIGNED and numbered by the author, contains 2 typed pages of the original manuscript, each signed by Sandoz. Of the 185 copies produced and distributed by James F. Carr, 152 copies also contained a separate map volume with a large fold-out map with several pages of map keys with both volumes housed in a slipcase. James Carr had the maps made up in batches, as he was using his own money for the project, and delivered them to the bindery when they became available. The last set of maps (33 of them) never made it to the bindery, as financial and then health complications ended the project. The bindery was left with the last 33 copies without having been paid, but went ahead and bound them without the map volume. The spine on the last 33 copies have a green label to show the difference. The 152 copies with the map volume were sold to the public, but the 33 copies without remained in storage at the bindery when it closed down. This is one of the 33 copies..
