About This Item
Unrecorded UK edition mostly identical with the first US edition (including February, 1907 printing statement), with these divergent points: Title page is a cancel, with new title page tipped in on an obvious stub; "London" rather than New York in primary position in publisher statement at foot of title page; "No. 525" typeset in 4-point font at lower left on title page; "Macmillan Colonial Library" at top of title page; absence of Norwood Press printer slug on copyright page; typeset "This Edition is intended for circulation only in India and the British Colonies" statement below copyright notices. Both BAL (11903) and Woodbridge (52) name the London: T. Werner Laurie, 1908 edition as the first UK edition, with no mention of this one. This copy certainly precedes the Laurie edition. OCLC/Worldcat find only 2 copies catalogued as 1907 London "Macmillan Colonial Library" edition (University of California, Berkeley Library and Waseda University Library, Tokyo). Rare.
Synopsis
A young man in modern America is terrorized by visions of an earlier, primitive life. Across the enormous chasm of thousands of centuries, his consciousness has become entwined with that of Big-Tooth, an ancestor living at the dawn of humanity. Big-Tooth makes his home in Pleistocene Africa, a ferocious, fascinating younger world torn by incessant conflict between early humans and protohumans. Before Adam is a remarkable and provocative tale that thrust evolution further into the public spotlight in the early twentieth century and has since become a milestone of speculative fiction. The brilliance of the book lies not only in its telling but also in its imaginative projection of a mindset for early humans. Capitalizing on his recognized ability to understand animals, Jack London paints an arresting and dark portrait of how our distant ancestors thought about themselves and their world.
