His stories came from within Germany, which certainly would have forbidden a correspondent from a British newspaper to enter, and their tone in the Hearst papers in 1915 is remarkably more neutral than the writing in his book Behind the German Veil, published in Britain in 1916 and in the United States after America entered the war.
