About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead and Company. Very Good. 1918. 8th Printing. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; US trade edition. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is sunning and fading to spots on the book covers along with a bit of light edge wear and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked name on the front endpaper. "In the following chapters I have tried to record my impressions, observations, interviews and adventures on a somewhat extensive journalistic pilgrimage through Germany in war-time." "Since he habitually wore a top hat, monocle and spats, he became known as The Dude Reporter. He also appeared in newspaper stories himself, the stories often involving altercations of one sort or another. He went to Europe to cover the war, saying he was working for the British newspapaer Daily Telegraph, but he was also working for Hearst and INS. His stories came from within Germany, which certainly would have forbidden a correspondent from a British newspaper to enter, and their tone in the Hearst papers in 1915 is remarkably more neutral than the writing in his book Behind the German Veil, published in Britain in 1916 and in the United States after America entered the war. Even if de Beaufort was a con man and swindler, his book is well-written, very entertaining and sometimes informative." .
