Tokyo: Hakubun-kan, 1901. First Edition. Trade paperback. Very good. A Japanese journalist describes a trip to the United States, where he mostly visited the East Coast. This book about the US was published at the very beginning of a period of unrestricted immigration, which lasted between 1901 and 1907, when more than 100,000 Japanese migrated to the US. This 1901 (Meiji 34) edition is uncommon, with two holdings in WorldCat (Columbia and the National Diet Library). The second, 1902, edition, is more widely held.
4, [16 leaves of black-and-white plates], 4, 280, [12] pages. The plates reproduce photographs of scenes in New York and Washington, DC. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in blue wrappers printed with a debossed image of the Statue of Liberty on the front cover.
