About This Item

London England: Chatto & Windus. It covers the first 41 years of his life, from his birth and childhood in Dublin to his marriage in 1898 to the Irish heiress and fellow socialist, Charlotte Payne-Townshend. In this fascinating work, Holroyd examines the early life of Bernard Shaw. Born into a family of impoverished Anglo-Irish gentry. Holroyed shows how Shaw escaped and transcended his backgound in order to become one of the most famous polemicists and literary figures of Late Victorian British society. Holroyd shows Shaw to be vunrable as well as ambitious. He desired love, social justice, as well as fame and notoriety. As a socialist, he flirted with Anarchism and Marxism, before settling down with the Fabian reformist version of socialism. The work itself is in very good overall condition. DJ very good,Illustrated with plates. Black boards with gilt lettering in DJ. . Fine. Cloth. First Edition. 1988.
