About This Item

Easton Press, 2005. Collector's Edition. Full Leather. New/No Jacket as Issued. A handsome dark grey leather Collector's Edition in the original shinkwrap signed by the author, the late David Halberstam, on the signature page. Originally published in 1972, this is the story of a group of exceptionally bright men including Robert McNamara, McGeorge Bundy, Maxwell Taylor, William Bundy and Dean Rusk, who were assigned to the Vietnam problem by President John Kennedy. They failed in their mission but Halberstam's chronicle of their efforts is regarded as one of the best books about the Vietnam era. With 688 pp., the book is in fine unread condition in the original shinkwrap with gold gilt cover designs and page edges, moire silk endpapers and bound-in silk bookmark. Includes the Publisher's Note and Certificate of Authenticity from Easton Press. A beautiful copy.

Synopsis

David Halberstam's masterpiece, the defining history of the making of the Vietnam tragedy, with a new Foreword by Senator John McCain.Using portraits of America's flawed policy makers and accounts of the forces that drove them, The Best and the Brightest reckons magnificently with the most important abiding question of our country's recent history: Why did America become mired in Vietnam, and why did we lose? As the definitive single-volume answer to that question, this enthralling book has never been superseded. It is an American classic. From the Hardcover edition.
