A Modern Library edition presenting a selection of 45 short stories written from 1883 to 1893 by the master French storyteller Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893). Selected, and with an introduction by Saxe Commins. --- In Toledano spine 8 / red cloth / gilt titling on black spine & cover blocks / black topstain / grey Kent endpapers / jacket style i / verso advertises titles in ML catalog. Likely published c.1959 (though 1945 date appears in book). ML #98.4. --- A well-preserved copy: clean, sturdy and unmarked but with dulling to cover & spine gilding. A weakened front hinge has been repaired on this item. Price-clipped, brittle dust jacket with severe chipping along top edge; some additional chips and scuffed spots, but otherwise intact and protected in removable mylar wrapper.; 12mo (7 to 7-1/2 in. tall); xiv, 551, (10, ads) pages .
