About This Item
New York: E. P. Dutton & Co.. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1950. First Edition. Hardcover. [solid, clean copy, slight fading to cloth at spine and edges, very minor shelfwear; jacket a bit edgeworn, spine sunned, a few insignificant tears and wrinkles, some surface scratching]. The first of this Georgia lyric poet's two novels, and his second published book, this is the story of the effect on a family of mountain people when a man (referred to as "the Preacher") gets "a sudden 'call' to lay aside the lusts of the flesh." Although much honored in his home state during his lifetime, the author was beset with illness (both he and his parents suffered from tuberculosis) and financial worries related to the family farm, and committed suicide in 1958 at the age of 40. .
