About This Item

San Francisco: A.M. Robertson, 1914. First edition. Spine gilt dulled, covers moderately rubbed, splashes to rear board, usual toning to endpapers, near very good. Copy correction presumably by the author on page 24: the terminal "s" in "stands" crossed out at the beginning of the 7th line.. Original dark green ribbed cloth stamped in gilt; octavo; 141 pp.

Inscribed by George Sterling: "For Mrs. Thomas B. Bishop with the best wishes of George Sterling. San Francisco, March 19, 1917." George Sterling (December 1, 1869 – November 17, 1926) moved to Carmel in the summer of 1905 and his home became the center of a Bohemian colony of artists, writers, and others, including Mary Austin, Jack London, Ambrose Bierce, Arnold Genthe, Charles Warren Stoddard, et el. After the 1906 earthquake, Jack London's Piedmont circle of friends, known as "The Crowd", essentially decamped to Carmel. Sterling took his own life about 3 months after inscribing this book. He had been living for several years at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco and was found dead in his room of self-inflicted cyanide poisoning. BAL 18760
