About This Item

New York: New Directions Books, 1951. First Edition. Sharp copy of this collection of four plays (Phaedra, Hermaios, Iphigenia, and Berenike), issued as No.20 in The Direction Series. Warmly inscribed to Jonathan Williams (1929-2008), who first wrote to Rexroth as a dropout from Princeton, looking for advice about avoiding the draft. Within two years he made his way to Black Mountain, where he founded the Jargon Society, which would publish Rexroth's One Hundred Poems from the French in 1955. First Printing. Octavo (16.5cm); yellow cloth-covered boards, with titles stamped in black on spine; dustjacket; 100pp. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper: "For Jonathan Williams / with affection / Kenneth Rexroth." Light wear to spine ends and lower board edges, faint foxing to text edges, with a touch of offset from binders glue to pastedowns; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $1.50), with pinpoint wear to extremities, else very Near Fine.
