About This Item

Vancouver: Raincoast Books, 2004. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo. Full green paper boards. xvi, 365 pp. Fine condition. The first biography of Ed "Doc" Ricketts - "The Renaissance man of Cannery Row" Ricketts was a lone, largely marginalized scientist - an outcast to academia with no university degrees, memberships, or honours - and his pioneering ideas were not taken seriously by the scientific establishment. Now, some sixty years after his untimely death, Ricketts' ecological approach and all-encompassing vision, and especially his warnings about the excesses of modern society's materialism and technological mania, seem more relevant than ever.
