Hardcover. 232 pages; Clean and tight in original brown cloth binding, some light spotting to the cloth over the front board, corners a bit turned in. A Very Nice example of this book, quite scarce in the First Edition. OCLC: 5039555 Borrow's vivid narrative of his travels through Portugal & Spain encompassing his 5 years service (1835-40) as an agent of the British & Foreign Bible Society, distributing a Protestant New Testament in a predominantly Catholic country. The book describes adventures in remote regions, encounters with gypsies & bandits & frequent confrontations with authority. The book was a best-seller on both sides of the Atlantic & was never out of print during the 19th century. ; Experience the pleasure of reading and appreciating this actual printed item. It has its own physical history that imbues it with a character lacking in ephemeral electronic renderings. .
