About This Item

London: William Pickering, 1834 4 volumes 8vo (22 cm), XII, 530 pp; [2], PP. 531-1054; [2], PP. 1055-1528; [2], PP. 1529-2002. Cont. calf, gilt supralibros "Gang forward" on all front and back boards, gilt-lettered spines, all edges gilt, silk bookmarks (spines expertly rebacked, edges rubbed, endpapers toned, few spots to guard leaves). "First edition of what is still the best general bibliography of English literature from collector's viewpoint. It was, however, a financial failure, and Lowndes, a third-generation bookseller, was forced to give up his own business and work as a cataloguer for H. G. Bohn." (Breslauer & Folter 125).
