About This Item

C. Philip in association with St. Paul's Bibliographies, Winchester, first edition, 1985. Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm,. xxix, 168 pp, 16 plates. Over 600 entries. From the introduction: "This bibliography of books on fireworks is concerned primarily with 'recreative' rather than 'military' fireworks, 'pour la recreation' or 'pour la joie' rather than 'pour la guerre', for 'die Lustfeuerwerker' and not 'der Ernstfeuerwerker'. " From the blurb: "It is a surprising fact that fireworks, which have accompanied nearly every major event, whether religious, royal or ceremonial, worldwide for over four hundred years, should have previously escaped the attention of bibliographers. ..The present book [has] over 600 entries, representing more than 250 authors who have dealt with recreative fireworks in their books. As a measure of the rarity of many of the items, over 50 per cent are not recorded in the National Union Catalog, and nearly 60 per cent are not in the British Library General Catalogue. An ex-library copy with library stamps and inkblots on the endpapers, with some ink offsetting to the flaps of the dustwrapper, dockert on rear pastedown endpaper, otherwise near Very Good in a slightly marked dustwrapper.
