About This Item
Chicago: Normandie House, 1950. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Good +. No. 149 of 345 copies, octavo size, 95 pp., with laid in original invoice signed by Jack Potter. American writer John Dos Passos (1896-1970) was known for creating nonlinear stories immersed in the roving lives of the characters; his "U.S.A" trilogy is his best-known work, and both his fiction and nonfiction have had major influence on subsequent literature and especially experimental writers such as Jean-Paul Sarte. This bibliography details Dos Passos' first editions, with information on the binding and first periodical appearances of his works, written by Chicago-based bookseller Jack Potter. Potter provides a thorough compilation of Dos Passos' works, with an introduction from Dos Passos himself; included also is the original invoice sent in 1950 (the year of publication) to the original owner of this volume, signed by Jack Potter on top of his printed name.
___DESCRIPTION: Full brown cloth, reproduced signature of John Dos Passos in gilt on the front board, gilt lettering on the spine, fore-edge uncut, title page in brown and black, most signatures unopened, "Addenda" page loosely laid in at the rear, with articles "omitted through oversight copying materials from earlier notes"; Fairfield and Bodoni types, Victorian laid paper, octavo size (9.25" by 6.25"), pagination: [1-8] 9-94 [95], one of 345 copies, this number 149. Loosely laid in is the original invoice, one sheet folded in half, signed by Jack Potter.
___CONDITION: Internally near fine, the binding a bit better than good; with a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; boards with some minor soiling and old dampstains ( which slightly stained the bottom edge of the text block but not affecting the interior), very slight rubbing to the edges of the boards, gilt lettering on the spine is rubbed but still legible, corners are ever so gently bumped, and there is off-setting from the glue on the "Addenda" sheet, which is dry and the "Addenda" sheet is now loose. The original invoice is near fine, clean, with very slight age-toning, and two small creases at the right corners.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
