About This Item

Yale University Press, New Haven, first edition, 1942. Cloth, large 8vo,. xxxiv, 300 pp, frontispiece plate. 135 entries. From the blurb - "This records and describes all the books and fugitive pieces printed at Walpole's Press, and identifies numerous variants. An integral part of the bibliography is the record of the many unacknowledged reprints by Walpole's printer, Thomas Kirgate, ranging from Gray's Odes to forgotten fugitive pieces. Ten forgeries prepared in the nineteenth century are also described. In addition, a few of the more interesting copies of each book have been listed and their provenance traced, and a complete census of known copies of the rare fugitive pieces has been included. The bibliography is based in large part on the Walpolian collection of W. S. Lewis, who has written a preface." Booklabel of the bibliophile A R A Hobson on front pastedown endpaper, and a carbon copy of an interesting 1943 two-page typescript letter from his father G.D. Hobson (a Director of Sotheby's and a bookbinding historian) to Hazen laid in. Hobson discusses some bindings making reference to his contrbutions to 'English Bindings, 1490-1940, in the Library of J.R. Abbey'. Slight agetoning to margins, otherwise Very Good in a duststained and chipped dustwrapper.
