Leipzig: Wilhelm Engelmann, 1843. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo. [4], iv, 175 pp. Very attractive late-19th-century quarter morocco with the initials "H.G." in gold on the foot of the spine, marbled boards and endpapers, green ribbon marker. Etched bookplate of Henri Gaidoz on paste-down. Paper browned and foxed, the spine slightly darkened and gently rubbed. In very good condition.
Surprisingly rare original edition of Grässe's wonderful Bibliotheca magica et pneumatica, an intriguing bibliographical treasure trove listing hundreds of books relating to magic, superstition, ghosts, metoposcopy, divination, demonic possession, witches, dreams, werewolves, vampires, etc. Grässe (1814-1865) was a German bibliographer, curator and literary historian with a special interest in folklore and mythology.
The book and the exlibris form a happy marriage: the bookplate is that of Henri Gaidoz (1842-1932), an important French folklorist, ardent collector and founder of two scholarly journals: "Revue Celtique" and "Mélusine". His collection (or a large part of it) is now held at the Indiana University Library.

Description:
New York: Mason Brothers, 1853. 192 pages. Illustrated with in-text wood engravings. Binding is embossed brown cloth, with gilt lettering on front cover. Hiram Mattison (1811-1868) was a prominent Methodist minister in New York, who, in addion to his opposition to fraudulent psychics, was an active proponent of temperance and abolition of slavery. In this book he debunks his era's fad of "spirit-rapping" and other practices by which mediums or spiritualists claim to communicate with the dead. As Mattison states in the preface, spirit-rapping "is the grand climax of soothsaying, astrology, witchcraft, phrenology, mesmerism, clairvoyance, Psychology, Fourierism, Millerism, Mormonism, and all other superstitions, delusions, and isms that have ever been, or probably ever will be." The book is in about very good condition: clean and tight, with some minor edgewear and shallow chipping of cloth at head and foot of spine. Pages are moderately foxed. Previous owner's name…

binding is very clean- just a touch of edgewear/shelfwear. They used a two tone quarter green cloth over gray cloth and the green portion still is glossy. Internals very clean ( not even any pricing marks in pencil) though there is a paper clip indentation at the lower edge affecting the title, onwards for 20 pages. Unclipped wrapper has only some rubbing but I detect no tears, creases or chips. The paper is wonderful; it strikes me as feeling and looking like "linen" (not your business/office grade) but I am by no means an expert on paper. This US Stackpole Edition omits 8 plates which are in the UK Allen & Unwin volume. Well-preserved, excellent copy.Inv. # 63672 NOAB* bds 9/2023
