About This Item
New York, New York: MacMillan Company, 1948. First Edition First Printing 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good/VG-. Hader, Berta; Hader, Elmer. Lovely tale depicts how the birds & animals of the woods & meadows go about preparing for winter, informed by the authors' own experiences & observations as they made their own home in a stone house they built themselves in the countryside overlooking the Hudson River at Nyack, NY. This was their fifth book, & won the 1949 Caldecott Award for their illustrations. A true FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1948 (with the requisite date on title page as well as the copyright page), this hardcover small 4to (8.5" x 10.25") has medium blue cloth-covered boards stamped with white lettering & snowflake design to front/white lettering to spine. As an EX-LIB copy, it has a card pocket in rear & minimal markings both there & in front matter. Condition is Good: generally quite very clean, with an occasional small smudge. Stitched binding is secures as are both hinges. Pages off-white with modest tanning, unmarked save for library stamps, as mentioned. Both front & rear endpapers have some creasing & unclosed tears. Tiny split at bottom of gutter between frontispiece & title page. Tape residue to exterior of both boards, along with slight fading to both edges. The front DJ flap is clipped at top, $2.50 price intact at bottom. Condition is VG- (minus): the original mylar covering was a tad too small, causing a bit of wrinkling & creasing at both top & bottom edges of DJ. This had been removed & replaces with brand new--looks lovely as can be, strongly colored & clean, with a bit of rubbing & chipping to flaps & spine. Our photos depict the exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have! Same day shipping on all orders received by 2 pm Weekdays (Pacific time); later orders, Weekends, & holidays ship very next business day.
Synopsis
The woodland animals were all getting ready for the winter. Geese flew south, rabbits and deer grew thick warm coats, and the raccoons and chipmunks lay down for a long winter nap. Come Christmastime, the wise owls were the first to see the rainbow around the moon. It was a sure sign that the big snow was on its way.
