About This Item

Twin Palms, Santa Fe, 1997. Later Edition. Hardcover (in Slipcase). Fine Condition/Fine. LYON, DANNY. The Bikeriders, quarto, Santa Fe: Twin Palms, 1997. Quarto, new edition, pp. xi, 96, 1 (colophon), black cloth boards with red lettering to the spine and front. First issued in 1968, this book is considered Lyon's second important contribution to the "new journalism" school of photography, the first being his civil-rights era work compiled in "The Movement" (1964). Robert Hirsch, in Seizing the Light," says "Bikeriders" was the result of Lyon's work as a so-called staff photographer for the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle gang. "The authenticity of the photographs was evidenced by over forty text pages of the bikers' telling their own stories." From Parr & Badger, Vol. 1, pp. 256: "The Bikeriders, an important and influential work, was one of the first books to bring a new genre to late twentieth-century photography, a genre that became more central as the century progressed. Contrary to most of the other social landscape photographers, who snatched life on the streets as they found it, Lyon photographed communities from the inside, making them an integral part of his life for the duration of the project." The 1997 edition for sale here includes a new preface by Lyon, the original introduction, and the 48 black-and-white plates. Condition of this book: Touch of sunning at leaves' edges, overall fine.
