She won 39 Grand Slam titles, including 12 in singles, 16 in Women's doubles, and 11 in mixed doubles. She was the founder of the Women's Tennis Association, and the Women's Sports Foundation. Inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. Co-Winner of the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 1972. Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was the first major female athlete to come out as gay in 1981. She worked have Women taken more seriously in the sport, and to make tennis more professional in the late 60's and early 70's.
