Bound in fine hardcover alum tawed pigskin. Beautifully bound in alum tawed pigskin over beveled wooden boards, elaborately blindestamped, with some hardware (clasp) still present, an excellent specimen of this style of binding and with a unique centerpiece stamp—an arrow up and an arrow down, with a bridge between the two incorporating a cross (representing Jesus coming to earth, dying on the cross, and rising again). A very similar ancient symbol can be found on Pictish rock carvings in Scotland (see the Elgin Cathedral Church Pictish stones). Josephus was a 1st century Jewish-Roman historian, who mentions Jesus in his writing, providing a 1st century non-Christian reference to the man Jesus Christ. Also, Josephus' histories are important references for Jewish 1st century history. Within the book, at the reference to Jesus you'll… Read More

[FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. NORDHOFF, Charles (1878-1947). -- HALL, James Norman (1887-1951). Mutiny on the Bounty. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1932.

8vo. 20th-century blue crushed levant gilt, upper cover with central illustration of a ship in white, red and green morocco on-lay, edges gilt, concealing a FORE-EDGE PAINTING of the H.M.S. Bounty and a ship of mutineers at sea; quarter morocco gilt slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of the first work in the Bounty Trilogy, based on the 1787 mutiny in Tahiti. Throughout history, few voyages are as infamous as that of the bounty. Even before the doomed sailing, the naval exploits of Lieutenant William Bligh and his participation in the third and final voyage of Captain James Cook, were quickly becoming legend. Sailing with such a distinguished officer should have been an honour but this was not the case.

On April 28th, 1789, the HMS Bounty was taken over by disgruntled crew members, led by acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian. The mutiny came on the heels of… Read More

Philadelphia: Sold by H. and P. Rice, No. 50 Market-Street, 1793. Duodecimo. Contemporary blue paper wrappers with early manuscript title on front wrapper. Wrappers are worn with neat repair along spine; rear wrapper discolored. Shorthand annotation on front free endpaper and second plate. Small tear to outer margin of initial leaves not affecting text. Minor soiling to folding plate with tear to inner margin just touching text of leaves B1-B2, else very good. Includes the subscriber list as well as two engraved plates.. An exceptional copy of one of the earliest shorthand manuals printed in America-and this copy is rarer still because it contains the oft-missing subscriber list, which includes Thomas Jefferson (then Secretary of State), James Madison (then a Virginia representative), and members of Congress, among others. This short manual describes the shorthand system of Thomas Lloyd (1756-1827), who was known as the "Father of American Shorthand" on account of his stenographic skill and method… Read More

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1932. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a splendidly clean jacketed U.S. first edition, only printing – by far the cleanest example of the dust jacket we have ever offered. Published in Britain as Thoughts and Adventures, this is one of the few Churchill first editions for which the U.S. edition bears a different title than the British. The U.S. first edition text was photo-reproduced from the British first edition, but everything else about the edition differs markedly from its British counterpart. The bright red-orange coarse cloth binding of Amid These Storms matches the style of the 1930 U.S. first edition of A Roving Commission, but the dust jacket for Amid These Storms is strikingly unique. It features a full-length photo of Churchill in Flanders in 1916, wearing his French Poilu's helmet. This image appears on both the spine and front face. The orange color on the dust jacket and the red-orange binding proved exceptionally prone to… Read More

Arthur L. Humphreys, 1904. First Edition. Leather Binding. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Extra-Illustrated Copy in Beautiful 'Cosway' Binding by Bayntun-Riviere This stunning, extra-illustrated book on celebrated courtesan and author Ninon de Lenclos is housed in a stunning, Cosway-style binding by Bayntun Riviere. Bound in full brown crushed morocco, spine with raised bands, oval portrait of Ninon de Lenclos at the height of her beauty inset under glass in front cover, spine and both covers beautifully tooled with stylized Art Nouveau flower designs (probably fuschias); gilt-tooled inner dentelles with floral designs at corners, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A vibrant, fine copy aside from several surface scratches and small spots of wear; front cover a bit sunned. Housed in binder's velvet-lined green cloth clamshell box. The binding's provenance is known back through 1948, so certainly dates from the period between 1939 (when Bayntun acquired Riviere's tools), and that date. In… Read More

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1931. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing, in the quite scarce hardcover binding. India is a collection of ten Churchill speeches as part of his campaign against the India Bill, over which he broke with his party’s leadership. The first edition is most commonly found in orange paper wraps. An unknown but certainly far smaller number were issued in hardcover bindings, of which there are two variants - one with the spine title reading horizontally and one with the spine title reading vertically. This vertically spine-titled copy approaches very good condition, somewhat soiled and sunned but nonetheless fully intact and unrestored. The striking orange cloth remains square and tight, moderately spine sunned with some toning to the perimeter of the covers as well. Wear is light, mostly confined to the spine ends and corners. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to dust jacket flaps testify that this copy… Read More

No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
