About This Item
London: William A. Heinemann, 1912. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Exceedingly uncommon in the trade, there being only one additional copy in this state (the true First Edition). A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy. Burgundy paper over boards, greenish linen cloth-backed, sunned to light gray. Abraded paper title label to spine. Fine duotone likeness of the author at frontis with facsimile signature, tissue-protected. Previous owner's inscription at title page, a bit smudged. 102 [1] pp., and printed for the publisher by Ballantine Press and Coventry, of Covent Garden, London. The Wikipedia entry devoted to her says that Sarojini Naidu (13 February 1879 â 2 March 1949) "was an Indian political activist and poet who served as the first Governor of United Provinces, after India's independence. She played an important role in the Indian independence movement against the British Raj. She was the first Indian woman to be president of the Indian National Congress and appointed as governor of a state." As a poet her nickname of the "Nightingale of India" was given to her by Gandhi "because of the colour, imagery and lyrical quality of her poetry" (Wikipedia).Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
