Inscription on front flyleaf reads: Mildred White Yoars, Pheasant Field Seven Gates Farm The Vineyard, 1959 - one of the sponsors. The book was sponsored by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Pen note by former owner on p. 146 takes credit for a yellow-headed blackbird sighting. Small newspaper clipping laid in references the former owner and her sightings (some light shadowing of pages from that clipping where it's laid in). DJ edges have a few small tears, with creasing near them. Top rear DJ edge is missing a one-inch triangular piece. DJ spine is sunned.. Selling online since 1999. Quick shipping; Secure packing!

A complete reference, including a history of birding on the island; an annotated systematic list of all recorded birds; a list of summer, winter and permanent residents as well as migrants and accidentals; where to look for birds and who has seen them; and a large fold-out birdwatcher's map of the island. Inscribed in 1961 by both the co-author Guy Emerson and by Henry Beetle Hough, who contributes the first essay in the book -- "A Ticket to Martha's Vineyard" -- to Eleanor Herrick Stickney, a lifelong, avid bird-watcher who was an ornithologist for the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History for 30 years, in charge of the collection of specimens there and director of the library. Henry Beetle Hough was the longtime owner, editor and publisher of the Vineyard Gazette and a Pulitzer Prize winner.
