About This Item

The Birth of Powered Flight Stamps Folder is a presentation folder commemorating the beginning of the Age of Air, as represented by the Wright Brothers' first powered flight in 1903.

In 1928, the United States issurd two commemorative aviation stamps during the International Civil Aeronautics Conference in Washington, D.C. The 2¢ Wright Airplane stamp showed the Wright Brothers' first airplane in flight, and the 5¢ Globe and Airplane stamp commemorated the rapid growth of aviation around the world.

The folder, which was published in 1988 by Fleetwood of Cheyenne, Wyoming, measures approximately 9 ½ inches wide by 6 ½ inches tall. It is hard bound in black leather covered boards, with the publisher's name printed in gilt on the front surface. The opened folder shows text related to the Wright Brothers flight and subsequent progress on the internal top surface, and a colorful artist's rendition, by Harry Schaare, of that first flight, as well as one of each of the commemorative stamps on the lower internal surface. Both inner surfaces are covered in a plastic protective sheet.
The folder is in like new condition.

The illustrations accompanying this description show the folder's lower internal surface, upper internal surface, and the front cover.

Harry Schaare (May 23, 1922 – April 9, 2008) was an American painter whose work has primarily served the book cover and magazine illustration markets. He did illustrations for Boy's Life, Sports Illustrated, Reader's Digest, Aviation Week, and several other magazines. He was the artist for a broad array of book covers in a wide variety of genres.
