This is a scarce, first edition thus copy of "The Birth of Tragedy - or, Hellenism and Pessimism" by Friedrich Nietzsche. 1909 1st UK edition, thus; T.N. Foulis; Edinburgh and London. Limited edition - this copy is No. 55 of 1,500 copies printed. "The First Complete and Authorized English Translation" - translated by Wm. A. Haussmann. Volume Three of "The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche."

Condition:
There are some very light stains on the covers. Cloth tears at the cover corners. There is a split along the entire length of the left edge of the spine where it meets the back cover. Chipping to the top and bottom edges of the spine with pieces missing (see photo). Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. There are numerous pages with pencil markings such as notations in the outer margins, lines of text underlined, vertical lines in the outer margin highlighting lines of text, etc. A rear end paper has page numbers with notes written next to them in pencil. Light tanning to the end papers and pastedowns. Overall the book is in Fair condition.

Synopsis

The philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche was born in Prussia in 1844. After the death of his father, a Lutheran minister, Nietzsche was raised from the age of five by his mother in a household of women. In 1869 he was appointed Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Basel, where he taught until 1879 when poor health forced him to retire. He never recovered from a nervous breakdown in 1889 and died eleven years later. Known for saying that “god is dead,” Nietzsche propounded his metaphysical construct of the superiority of the disciplined individual (superman) living in the present over traditional values derived from Christianity and its emphasis on heavenly rewards. His ideas were appropriated by the Fascists, who turned his theories into social realities that he had never intended. Shaun Whiteside’s translations include Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy and Musil’s The Confessions of Young Törless for Penguin Classics.
