In 1910 Winston Churchill was a young lion of the Liberal Party, vexing the British establishment and helping Lloyd George lay the foundations of the modern welfare state. Here is the original 1910 leaflet publishing Churchill's November 14 letter stating vehement opposition to the veto power of the House of Lords. This leaflet captures the young radical Churchill in full flower. "Was ever inequality more scandalous? Was ever injustice more glaring? All classes are to have votes; but only Tory votes are to count. WE CAN SUBMIT NO LONGER TO THIS USAGE. THIS IS OUR LAND AS MUCH AS IT IS THEIRS." Full dark blue levant morocco bindings with fancy gilt turn ins, full bright gilt edges, decorative spine with gilt lozenge design, red leather labels in compartments between raised bands and bound by Holloway. Bookplate on endpaper. Minor brown blemishes to the colour plates and on the pages opposite. Wear to the joints on v.2, front joint is cracked down to the first compartment, otherwise are tender, covers are lightly rubbed with scattered dark blemishes and minor wear to the gilt edges, top corners on both volumes are slightly chipped and bumped. Otherwise both volumes are both firmly bound and in very good condition. 504 & 643 pp. .

An attack on John Milton's "Pro Populo Anglicano Defensio" (published 1651), Cromwell, and the executioners of Charles I in 1649. Milton replied in his Defensio Secunda, 1654. Part 2 - [iv], 124p this seems to lack iv pages at the start in comparison with the copy described by Holzenberg. The two parts bound together in original very worn quarter morocco. Signs of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown. Front free end paper detached and with some abrasions. Together with a volume of plates in the Middle HIll boards, the plates for part 1 loosely inserted, those for part 2 bound in. Some browning and spotting. 26 plates. Holzenberg 249 which refers to both vols. Part 2 and the plates are more difficult to find than part 1.
