About This Item

New York: Sundial Press, 1932 Very Good 1932 Sun Dial reprint of the 1932 Doubleday original by Thorne Smith, who wrote the Topper novels where were serialised on television in the 1960's (?) [see also Did She Fall? available from Sparkle Books) with naughty drawings by Roese, the creator of "Babe" (no, not the pig, the perhaps showgirl character he drew for Life magazine]. The text, was also considered quite risque, although as noted on the BBC website, " There is very little sex in Smith's books. There is a tremendous amount of talk about sex, or talk that dances around the edges of sex. The double entendre is run through every variation imaginable." This novel describes the adventures of a group of young things (and of course, a Bishop) who accidentally end up in a nudist colony. Very entertaining and written in pseudo British (in the P.G. Wodehouse mode). Greyish boards with blue outlined blind stamped bishop in long johns on front board and blue lettering. The boards are only lightly worn, with some light soil, but are bulging in the middle, giving the book an ovalish shape. Clean interior with no writing or marks. There are a number of dog eared pages and five pages toward the end are crumpled, although not torn. Some light age toning around the edges. Good plus dust jacket has chevroned corners, but retains a tearoff corner description of the edition and the original price is intact (79 cents). The bishop, in long johns, is flanked by two semi-nude young ladies and a duck (named Havelock Ellis). There are two pulls on the spine, the edges are chipped and torn, with loss of a one inch square on the back panel and a one inch triangular piece at front upper edge as well as two one inch long tears at upper front panel and lower rear panel.
